School Prom at ISK

Have you ever participated in a formal dance? At our school, on May 25th, we had prom. A prom is a semi-formal dance or gathering of high school students. Normally, proms are designated for seniors. Luckily due to the small size of the school, the whole high school was eligible to participate. When you ask a person out to go with them to prom, it is called a “promposal.” A lot of promposals occured at our school, mostly public. We had our prom at the Marriott Hotel from 7 to 11 pm.

It was my first formal dance, so I was really nervous, having to wear a suit. As a fan of K-Pop, I didn’t really know the songs that were played during prom, which were mostly rap songs. It was extremely loud that we literally had to shout in order to talk to each other. Nevertheless, I got to meet my old friends, and get back with them. As the treasurer of the Student Council at my school, I was happy to see that the financial decisions that I made were to use, and many others, including the seniors that are graduating in a week, were enjoying their time at prom.

There were many things to do, such as taking pictures on a red carpet, dancing, socializing, and the Silverback Awards. The Silverback Awards are chosen by a survey. They are given to students that are most likely to be or do something.  I won an award for a person who would most likely to sleep through an earthquake.

Here is an interview with a friend, Mawunyo:
Q. What is your general opinion about prom?
"Prom is a good and meaningful experience because you get to interact with everyone in high school and I think it is something everyone should try to experience at least once during their time in high school."

Q. Before you went to prom, what were your expectations?
"My expectations were that it was going to be a really fancy ball like event where everyone would wear fancy and dance a lot."

Q. During prom, what did you like and hate?
"I liked that I hung out with my friends. We got to dance, eat food, just socialize in general, and meet new people that you haven’t really talked to for the past year. I hated that it was hot because when you are wearing a suit in a hot room you do not feel comfortable."

Q. After prom, how did you feel?
"I felt good and refreshed. I am excited to have prom again next year because it was so much fun and it was my first time ever in my life."

After prom, I felt really refreshed. Although I am not much of a dancer, I was still able to dance to several songs at times. Since it was my last year at this school, I feel it was a worthy memory to make with my friends before I leave. I took many pictures with my friends, socialized and interacted with them. Plus, I also got to know some good songs to listen to other than K-Pop.

All in all, prom was extremely fun and entertaining. To students reading this, if there is a prom at your school, I advise you to experience it at least once during your high school career. If you are shy like me, it may seem a bit intimidating, but just try it! You probably won’t regret it. It’s never bad to try something new.

Seeing that you are a freshman, it was interesting to see prom from the eyes of an underclassmen, as my school only allows juniors and seniors to go to prom! Also, like Jaehong said, reading about prom at an international school outside of Asia was quite insightful!   삭제

It was quite interesting to hear about your school's prom experience, especially because your school is outside of Asia. Prom would have been extremely rewarding to plan and set up, especially as a member of Student Council. Thank you for sharing your unique experience at Prom!   삭제
